UPSC: IAS Essay paper draws flak

The UPSC is currently condcuting the Civil Services Main exam despite the third wave of the coronavirus pandemic. On Friday, the Essay exam was held. And the topics have bamboozled many aspirants.

“The real is rational and rational is real” is one of the topics. It’s a philosophical topic that has not gone down well with many. “Philosophy of wantlessness is Utopian, while materialism is a chimera” is another philosophical topic.

“Your perception of me is a reflection of you; my reaction to you is an awareness of me” so goes another topic.

Reacting to the topics, educator Sandeep Manudhane tweeted, “UPSC should ensure that monks, heartbroken ex-lovebirds, and philosophy majors do not set their essay papers. Nor do quote pickers from Google.”

Archit Chandak, an IPS officer, tweeted, “This makes little sense. One section should have philosophy orientation. But maybe this is too much? Exam is for recruiting officers for public service, not to become Jagat Gurus. Most people in India are still dealing with real ground issues, not rooted in philosophy.”
