Tense times for Sankranthi movies as Covid-19 sees sharp uptick

India has logged 2.47 lakh new Covid-19 cases in the last 24 hours. This is 27% higher than the previous day’s tally. The test positivity rate has gone up from 11.5% to 13%.

This comes at a time when Telugu cinema is looking at an upbeat Sankranthi season in the coming days. On January 14, three movie releases are happening: ‘Bangarraju’, ‘Rowdy Boys’ and ‘Super Machi’. On January 15, ‘Hero’ will hit the cinemas.

A plus is that Telangana has 100% occupancy norm in place, unlike the case during Sankranthi last year. In Andhra Pradesh, too, the same norm is in force till January 18.
But the rising daily caseload is a matter of huge concern. As per some experts, India’s Covid-19 peak will be four lakh new cases per day this month itself. And the peak of the wave is expected to peter out by the first week of February. Looks like, for films, good times are going to be a luxury before mid-February.
