Director Shangmugh Shankar became a sensation after Gentleman. He consolidated his position in Tamil Industry post a huge blockbuster across all South languages, Indian/Bharateeyudu. In fact, he revealed in an interview that he wrote initial draft of Gentleman keeping Rajni in mind and tried to rope in Rajni for Mudhalvan/ Oke Okkadu.
He waited patiently for Rajni to accept his offer and when the combination happened, he went for a complete his style and Rajni style commercial film. The movie turned out to be huge Industry Hit for Tamil Cinema while it became equally big hit in Telugu, Kerala states. In fact, it might have even crossed numbers from Tamil Nadu, say few.
The movie turned out to be the first one to collect 100 crores Nett in India and 150 crores gross Worldwide. It got released simultaneously in many foreign countries, an unprecedented move for any regional language film from India. Shivaji built on the Rajni stardom in youth that Chandramukhi hinted at.
This movie success paved way for Rajamouli to mount Magadheera on large scale and then Enthiran/Robot came and Rajamouli pushed the envelope even further with Baahubali, now RRR. Today, everyone dreams about achieving a Pan-India success.
