Surya Kumar Yadav vs Shreyas Iyer debate Intensifies

Surya Kumar Yadav showcased adaptability to T20I and ODI cricket. His latest century in 49 balls during a losing cause against England in 3rd T20I has increased the debate about who is the most deserving and fitting No.5 for Indian batting line-up.

India has been trying to find ideal team combination for 2023 World Cup. Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma have done exceptionally well till the Semi-Final game in 2019 WC. MS Dhoni played slowly but helped India recover against West Indies and failed to take them over the line against England and New Zealand. He announced retirement post the debacles.

He has been watching over the team in 2015 as Captain and as unannounced mentor in 2019 after winning 2011. Now, Kohli and Rohit Sharma will be expected to play his role in 2023. Kohli might play second ODI, if he is fit. While the discussion about him being continued in the team is going on, the No.5 debate with Shreyas Iyer showcasing lack of form also intensified.

India needs a stable in form batsman to be No.5 and Surya Kumar Yadav seems to be that person. He should definitely be a part T20I CWC, this year and after reviewing his performance in CWC, he might a chance in 2023 ODI one as well.

India needs to look past giving Iyer more opportunities as KL Rahul, if fit, will also look to walk into the team and he could be a contender for NO.5, if Rohit prefers Shikar Dhawan over him, to open. SKY has knocked the doors and we have to wait and see, which direction will Indian management look at, moving forward.
