Priyanka Gandhi trolled for ‘insulting’ UP, Bihar migrants

Punjab Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Channi today made controversial remarks at an election rally. He reportedly said that the migrants from Uttar Pradesh and Bihar won’t be allowed to enter the state. Congress general secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra was seen laughing as her party leader made the remarks.

Commenting on the controversy, columnist Sandip Ghose said that a dangerous trend of sub-regionalism is being set by political parties. “Farms in Punjab are dependent on agricultural workers from UP and Bihar. But, wonder what people of Uttar Pradesh think of Priyanka Gandhi clapping to Channi’s dog-whistle?” he added.

Sunanda Vashisht, another columnist, wrote, “Political parties will exploit this and rightly so. This is a full toss. But beyond electoral politics, one should contemplate what sort of a society Punjab has become where this statement resonates. NRI farmers who exploit labor from UP/Bihar are the same people who opposed farm laws.”
