Maxwell wins a rain hit match for Australia against SL

Glenn Maxwell scored 80 runs off 51 balls for Australia to edge out Sri Lanka in more valiantly fought first One Day International.

Sri Lanka had a good start with the bat as Pathum Nissanka and Danushka Gunathilaka have scored half centuries and put up a century stand. But both fell in the matter of few balls and SL ended up at 118/2 after a solid start.

Kushal Mendis consolidated the innings and batted well but lost partners consistently. Charith Asalanka and Wanindu Hasaranga helped with 37 each for SL to end up with 300/7 in 50 overs. Mendis scored 86 off 87. Hasaranga blasted quick 37 of 19 in final overs.

Australia had a bad start as Warner got duck out in the second over to Theekshana. Steve Smith and Aaron Finch came together for a 67 run partnership. Marnus Labuschagne and Smith continued to pace well. Smith scored a half century and got out.

Wanindu Hasaranga consistently took wickets for Sri Lanka but couldn’t stop Alex Carey, Marcus Stoinis, Glenn Maxwell onslaught. He did get Stoinis, Carey wickets and Cummins as well but Maxwell continued to torment SL bowlers.

Maxwell’s innings became the difference between Australian win and SL victory at the end of the innings. Australia scored required 282 runs in 42.3 overs as target got reduced to 282 in 44 overs for the visitors after rain delay.
