IPL Final: Gujarat Titans dominate RR in style and win

Indian Premiere League 2022 was dominated by one team and one team only, Gujarat Titans. They were the first team to qualify to playoffs, they won their qualifier to reach finals and in finals dominated like Champions. They just seemed like they had all the answers to questions that any other team has to pose and young team arrived on to the scene with a relaxed and cool captain, Hardik Pandya. Before that, as Indian Cricket completed 8 decades and India celebrating 75th Independence Year, IPL final has been kick started by stats like Ranveer Singh and AR Rahman. They both performed live and crowd had a blast cheering for them.

Cricket match started with both the young captains – Hardik Pandya of GT and Sanju Samson of RR posing with the title and then Rajasthan Royals won the toss and elected to bat first. They wanted to give their bowlers Trent Boult and Yuzvendra Chahal some good score to defend and win them the title.

Jos Buttler who scored most runs this tournament started off cautiously while Yashasvi Jaiswal blasted two sixes and one boundary in his short innings of 22 runs from 16 balls. After the fall of Jaiswal, Buttler, Samson and Padikkal found it hard to hit Yash Dayal (4-0-18-1), Rashid Khan (4-0-18-1) and Hardik Pandya (4-0-17-3). Shami (4-0-33-1) recovered well in the end but Lockie Ferguson (3-0-22-0) and Ravisirnivasan Sai Kishore (2-0-20-2) leaked few runs. Buttler ended his campaign on a disappointing note with 39 from 35 balls. Big Hitters Riyan Parag, Shimron Hetmyer found it hard to even time the ball.

Mainly, Rashid Khan’s spell contained the RR batsmen so much that they wanted to try hard against others. Hardik Pandya at the right time found his rhythm as a bowler and got wickets too. Both of them could create huge pressure on the batsmen in the middle overs.

Captain Hardik Pandya executed his plans really well. He seemed like he was waiting for such an occasion from long time. He showed that he has a relaxed head on his shoulders with bat and ball. He took 3 important wickets and scored 34 runs off 30 balls to ease any nerves in the dressing room after slow start and losing Matthew Wade, Wriddhiman Saha wickets cheaply. Boult among RR bowlers looked really up to the task and bowled 4-1-14-1. He did not receive support from other bowlers to really make a meal out of the chase for GT.

Shubman Gill played with a mature head and the target suited his style of play too. He could take singles and doubles to rotate the strike with Hardik Pandya and see off any jitters in the camp. He remained not out with 45 runs off 43 balls with 3 boundaries and a six. He formed important partnerships with Hardik Pandya and David Miller to win his team, their first Title in their first final.

Shubman Gill finished off the match in Obed McCoy over after David Miller went after Ravichandra Ashwin. He scored 32 runs off 19 balls to take his team through. Yuzvendra Chahal got only one wicket but bowled very economically to return with figures, 4-0-20-1. Gill and Pandya showed maturity by not going after him. Instead they picked out Ashwin.

Miller took off on Prasidh Krishna who gave away 40 runs in his 4 overs. Before the last over from Obed McCoy, Miller smacked Ashwin and Krishna all over the ground to bring GT close to the victory. The pure emotion on his face and Gill’s could be seen after the winning moment, how they hugged each other. Entire team just marched on to the ground as a hunting unit ready to catch their prey.

On the whole, Gujarat Titans dominate the final match like they did entire season. They restricted a powerful batting line up that scored 207 against RCB on same ground the other night for mere 130/9 in 20 overs and chased it down with 11 balls to spare and by losing only 3 wickets. While they did not end up with Purple Cap or Orange Cap like RR players, Chahal and Buttler respectively did, they performed like a team throughout the tournament finding someone or the other to raise to the occasion at crucial junctures to script this historic moment.
