In Cricket there is an old adage, Catches win Matches. Lucknow Super Giants held on to chances given by KKR batsmen and that helped them pull off a stunning victory from the claws of defeat. Quinton de Cock and KL Rahul opened the innings for LSG and scored 209 runs batting through the 20 overs.
KKR bowlers have been doing well this season but they did not receive help from their fielders. Quinton was dropped early in his innings and he went to score massive 140 runs from 70. His partnership with KL Rahul is highest for any wicket in IPL history. Quinton gave one more chance in the middle of his innings but it was also grassed.
On the contrary, LSG stunned KKR by not dropping crucial chances. In fact, it was Evin Lewis superman-ish one handed catch that allowed LSG to win the match. Rinku Singh kept going against LSG bowlers in the last three overs and he hit 4 sixers, 2 boundaries in his 40 runs from 15 balls, innings. Even Sunil Narine scored 21 off just 7 balls with 3 sixers to his aid.
When the equation tilted in favor of KKR, 3 runs from 2 balls, Rinku Singh tired to smash another six to finish the innings. But he got out in the deep to a stunning one handed catch by Evin Lewis. For the next ball, Umesh Yadav got bowled for a slow yorker.
KKR has themselves to blame for losing this match as batsmen this time came good and kept them in the hunt. Actually, had fielders managed to hold on to the chances presented by Quinton, they might have won the match and kept their chances to qualify alive. By the way, with this loss, they have ended their 2022 campaign on a low. At one point, they were the table toppers. But LSG won both their matches against KKR and ensured their qualification to playoffs.
Gujarat Titans and LSG qualified this season to playoffs while last season winners CSK have been on last but one position and multiple champions, Mumbai Indians have occupied the last place.
