Indian Badminton Team creates history at Thomas Cup

Indian Badminton team created history on Sunday by beating Malaysia in straight matches with a score line, 3-0. This is first time India won the prestigious Thomas Cup. Kidambi Srikanth who played key role in writing India’s fortunes through out the tournament, won his singles match and Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty, doubles duo won their doubles match.

To complete the triumph Lakshya Sen won his singles rubber too. Malaysia, the 14-time champion did not expect such an inspiring performance from the underdogs, India, who never won the tournament and did not clear the fourth stage since 1979.

Himanta Biswa Sharma, President of Indian Badminton Association and also, Chief Minister of Assam, expressed his happiness for India’s men team triumph and announced Rs. 1 Crore prize money to players and Rs. 20 Lakhs for support staff.

He congratulated the players and expressed desire to see Indian Badminton shining on world stage like this in coming years too. HS Prannoy, who got injured in Semi-final match was declared fit to play the crucial final but Men’s team saw that he doesn’t have risk his health further after a spirited show in the Semi-finals.
