Elections: Modi may have blundered on Punjab’s front

Usually, Narendra Modi and Amit Shah are perceived to be the most politically astute. But there is a perception that they didn’t understand Punjab before announcing the three Farm Laws. The laws were withdrawn last year after 1.5 years of farmers’ protests.

Punjab is heading for Assembly polls this month. A few opinion polls have said that Congress is losing the State despite all its attempts to get its act together after Captain Amarinder Singh’s exit. Either AAP is winning or will emerge as the single largest party most probably.

There is also this view that, in the best-case scenario for non-Congress, non-AAP parties, SAD could become the single largest party. It shows that SAD and BJP would have won this election and gone on to form the government had the Farm Laws never been made.
Modi brought in the Farm Laws and antagonized a large section of Punjab voters, analysts are saying.
